A vasectomy is a quick, simple, in-office procedure for permanent contraception in men. Vasectomies performed by Dr. Craw are completed in less than fifteen minutes and recovery time is minimal. Side-effects are rare and the vast majority of men are able to return to work 1-2 days after a vasectomy procedure.
No-Scalpel Vasectomy
Dr. McCraw utilizes the scapel-less technique for vasectomy procedures. Instead of multiple incisions, a clamp is used to make a single, small hole in the scrotum for access the seminal ducts. This eliminates the need for surgical sutures to close up the skin. Men receiving no-scalpel vasectomies typically report less pain, fewer infections and a lower risk of hematomas (blood clots that cause swelling under the skin)
Considerations
It is important to remember that vasectomies are not effective from day one after the procedure. The general rule of thumb is that it takes 20 ejaculations or three months to clear all sperm from the seminal tubes (and this can vary from patient to patient.) Your urologist will test your sperm count typically after three months to ensure it is zero. Until then, sex without another form of birth control can result in pregnancy.
An estimated 10% of men who get a vasectomy later seek a reversal. Both traditional and no-scalpel vasectomies are reversible. However, men considering vasectomies should be aware that reversal procedures are more complicated than vasectomies themselves.
